Costa Boal, Trás-os-Montes, Portugal
In the rugged hills of Trás-os-Montes, Costa Boal Family Estates continues a winemaking journey that started back in 1857. Rooted in the traditions of northern Portugal, the family has become a reference for preserving and restoring historic vineyards.
Their old vineyards are located in the Terra Quente, meaning “Hot Land”, sub-region near Mirandela, where hot days, cool nights, and schist-granite soils help produce wines that are both balanced and full of character.
At the heart of the project are 22 hectares of old vines, many over 65 years old, that have naturally adapted to the land over time, delivering low yields with great complexity and structure. These vineyards are planted in traditional field blends, with different grape varieties growing side by side to create uniquely layered wines. In late 2024, Costa Boal expanded their holdings with the acquisition of 10 more hectares of old vineyards in Mirandela—a strategic investment to strengthen their future in premium wine production and to protect the heritage of these historic vines for generations to come.
While Trás-os-Montes is the heart and soul of Costa Boal, the family also produces wines in the Douro and Alentejo. Each region adds something different, but the philosophy stays the same: minimal interference, maximum respect for the land, and a belief that great wines are made in the vineyard.
Every bottle is a reflection of time, place, and heritage—a way of honoring the past while looking ahead.
