Perched atop the scenic hills of Rovereto in Trentino, Azienda Agricola Dalzocchio epitomizes a harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and familial dedication. Established in 1979 by Riccardo Dalzocchio and his daughter Elisabetta, the estate transformed from uncultivated land into a flourishing vineyard dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir. Today, it spans two hectares of vineyards and an equal expanse of forest, producing approximately 8,000 bottles annually.
Situated at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level, the vineyard overlooks the valley and surrounding mountains. Encircled by woodland and a historic stone wall dating back to the 1700s, the site benefits from afternoon breezes that cool the vines during summer. The significant diurnal temperature variation before harvest enhances the grapes’ aromatic profile, while deep-rooted vines contribute to the wine’s structure and complexity.
The estate’s inaugural vineyard, planted in 1979, introduced 0.5 hectares of Pinot Noir, followed by an additional 0.6 hectares in 1985, utilizing the Guyot Poussard training system. These mature vines, with their deep-rooted systems, exhibit remarkable resilience, yielding grapes that encapsulate the complexity and elegance characteristic of the varietal.
Elisabetta Dalzocchio, who has been at the helm since 1995, has steadfastly adhered to organic and biodynamic farming principles. The vineyards eschew synthetic herbicides and pesticides, instead employing traditional practices such as manual plowing and green manure to enrich the soil. This commitment to sustainability ensures that the vines thrive in harmony with their natural surroundings, preserving the land for future generations.
The estate produces two distinguished wines: Pinot Nero IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti and Pinot Nero DOC Trentino Riserva. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in open oak vats without the addition of commercial yeasts or enzymes, respecting traditional methods. The wine then matures for 18 months in 228-liter oak barrels, resulting in a Pinot Noir of exceptional elegance.
The Dalzocchio estate’s dedication to preserving old vines is central to its philosophy. These venerable plants, considered part of the family, consistently produce wines of remarkable finesse and complexity, even in challenging vintages. By nurturing these living testaments to their heritage, the Dalzocchio family not only honors their past but also champions a sustainable future, crafting wines that are authentic expressions of their terroir and legacy. As Elisabetta remarks, “Our oldest vines have been with us since 1979 and are part of our family; even in the most difficult vintages, they guarantee the finesse and complexity of our wines.”
At Azienda Agricola Dalzocchio, the historic vines are more than agricultural assets; they are integral to the family’s heritage and the region’s viticultural legacy. Each vine is considered a unique work of art, embodying the family’s dedication to producing exceptional wines that honor their history and the land they cultivate.
