Argiolas, Sardinia, Italy

Argiolas winery, one of the largest wineries in Sardinia covering 230ha of vineyards, representing 11 indigenous varietals and 3 experimental vineyards, is considered a benchmark winery, expressing the traditions of a unique land: Sardinia.

Founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas, a man with a vision, determined in character and passionate about winemaking.  A legacy guarded by his sons Franco and Giuseppe, which has now been passed on to his grandchildren Valentina, Francesca and Antonio.

“When our grandfather Antonio celebrated his 100th birthday we celebrated him and his legacy with a new label, a passito Cannonau, which comes from one of the oldest and most resilient, century old vineyard.  One of the first vineyards he purchased at the very beginning,” says Valentina Argiolas.  “The 1.4 ha bush trained vine was planted to a steep slope at 210 meters above sea-level, difficult to access, where everything has to be carried out manually.  The limited production of 700 bottles, express the very essence of our grandfather’s legacy.”

Argiolas’ stewardship and protection of their territory stems from a deeply rooted philosophy to preserve the ecological resilience of their territory and an awareness that encompasses water management, crop rotation, grassing, sowing and insect biodiversity with the aim of optimising an environmental balance.

Over the past 10 years Argiolas Winery has used the Simonit and Sirch pruning method, which is based on non-invasive cuts, on young wood only, respecting the grapevines and their growth process.

Sardinia boasts an extraordinary number of native grape varieties. For Argiolas preserving this biodiversity strengthens the distinctive features of the territories and leads to unexplored taste discoveries. Through their research Argiolas has traced 11 grape varieties on the island and created the first regional biodiversity field, which includes 5,000 plants. From the grapes of the selected grafts, Argiolas has produced small trial batches of wine, to explore the characteristics of these productions with a future view to expand them, creating new labels.
